History You Can Touch
The museum does not see itself as a classic exhibition house, but rather as a “history theatre”. Around 1,000 exhibits – including personal memorabilia, large objects, and interactive stations – tell on 30 stages how Bavaria became what it is today. Particularly impressive is the free multi-vision show “What Happened Before” in the foyer, which guides you through Bavarian history from Roman times to the Napoleonic era with humour and powerful images.
The Permanent Exhibition – Bavaria from 1806 to Today
In the permanent exhibition you can explore around 1,000 objects, divided into 30 so-called "stages". Each focuses on an aspect of Bavarian history: the monarchy, revolution, National Socialism, post-war reconstruction, football, pop culture, and much more.
Highlights include:
- The crown of the first Bavarian king
- Original film cameras from the post-war period
- Personal items from athletes, musicians, and politicians
- Interactive stations for children and young people
Also worth seeing: the free multimedia show in the foyer “What Happened Before” – a spectacular, entertaining journey through time from Roman times to the modern day, displayed on a 40-metre panorama screen.
Special Exhibition 2025: Ludwig I – Bavaria’s Greatest King?
From 10 May to 9 November 2025, the Bavarian State Exhibition is dedicated to the flamboyant monarch Ludwig I. The exhibition highlights his role as builder, patron of the arts, and political player – and asks the question: Was he truly Bavaria’s greatest king? In addition, visitors can enjoy discounted admission to Walhalla, the Befreiungshalle, and reduced fares on boat trips to Walhalla.
Also Suitable for Families
The Museum of Bavarian History is great fun for children and young people too. Many stations are interactive, there are quizzes, hands-on elements, and exciting stories from everyday life in eras gone by.
Plus: children and young people under 18 enjoy free admission!
